EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

This report updates our last report of self-propelled asphalt pavers from January, 2013. Asphalt pavers play an indispensable role in the paving process—a process that also requires many other types of construction machinery, including road wideners, thin-hot mix paving machines, cold mix plant/paver recyclers, material transfer vehicles, compactors, rollers, and motor graders.

Asphalt has numerous applications, as it is used on a wide variety of paved surfaces including roads, driveways, parking lots, walking paths, airport runways, and tennis courts. Its main competitor, concrete, is more durable and easier to maintain but is also more costly. Although both products have their supporters, asphalt has proven to be the more popular choice, as it is used on approximately 90 percent of all paved surfaces.
