EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

This report examines the skid steer loader market in North America and is an update of our March 2010 report. There are 14 skid steer loader brands offered in North America at the present time. Seven companies are the primary manufacturers – several companies producing more than one brand. We are not mini-skid steer loaders as a part of this analysis including the OEMs manufacturing those machines.

JCB makes Volvo branded machines, Terex makes Terex and Takeuchi branded machines and Manitou manufactures Gehl, Mustang and Yanmar branded machines. In 2004, there were 23 skid steer suppliers. Komatsu and Thomas Equipment exited the North American skid steer market since our last report; however Thomas still offers “mini” skid steers. Skid steer loaders are available with either radial or vertical lift arms. The choice as to which is “better” depends on the application; radial lift is preferable where the work is performed below eye level whereas vertical lift is preferable when the work done is above eye level.

Skid steers loaders are one of the most popular machines on many worksites because they can be used in diverse conditions employing various attachments. They can be found in agricultural, construction and industrial applications. Table 1 provides a statistical summary to major sections of this report including North American sales and production, imports, exports, field population and 2012 estimates.
