EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

This report updates our October 2014 analysis of skid steer loaders. Skid steer loaders are one of the most popular and most commonly-used pieces of construction equipment. It is a relatively small four-wheeled vehicle with lift arms that can be outfitted with various attachments for performing a wide variety of applications in construction, agriculture, and industrial sectors. The machines are modestly priced and depending on the needs of the end-user, attachments can be a substantial part of the machine’s purchase price. Very small versions of a skid steer loader, known as a “mini-skid steer loader,” are available however they are not nearly as popular as its larger counterpart. We will briefly discuss mini-skid steers later in this report.

Table 1 provides a summary of the 2015 North American skid steer loader market. Unit sales declined for the first time in several years in 2015, while production declined for the third consecutive year. Imports of skid steer loaders are virtually non-existent. Bobcat imports some machines annually from the Czech Republic. Export levels are often in the X – X units range, but overseas business has declined considerably for the past few years due to a lackluster global economy. We estimate 2015 export levels of roughly eight percent of industry output compared to X percent in 2013. North American field population consisted of X machines, with approximately X percent found in the United States and the balance in Canada.
